Disciplinary Literacy in Career and Technical Education

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction - Career and Technical Education Team has made a tremendous effort to infuse Disciplinary Literacy into all aspects of the work that classroom instructors do in Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources; Business and Information Technology; Family and Consumer Sciences; Health Sciences; Marketing, Management and Entrepreneurship; and Technology and Engineering.  These six subject areas make up the departments in our middle and high schools known as Career and Technical Education (CTE).

CTE instructors promote classroom reading, writing, listening/speaking, language and critical thinking using authentic materials that support the development of their content. Educators guide students through complex informational texts by using strategies that develop conceptual understanding and provide students with relevant applications. One of the goals of CTE is to provide students with disciplinary literacy practices that not only expand students' content knowledge and skills but assist them in transferring these skills to real world situations.

In Career and Technical Education, Disciplinary Literacy is defined as the focus on the types of reading, writing, speaking, listening and thinking connected to real-world situations and professions.

Authentic Reading and Authentic Writing in CTE is reading/writing a variety of text for "real-world" purposes.  It is the type of reading and writing that professionals in this field would use in their everyday life.

Authentic reading and writing is meaningful, relevant, and useful to a career bound student. It provides readers/writers with print-rich environments from a variety of forms and genres. Authentic text material is significant since it increases students' motivation for learning, exposures them to industry vocabulary, and relates closely to students' interests and needs as they pursue post secondary education and careers.

Gallagher, Kelly. Readicide: How schools are killing reading and what you can do about it. NY, NY: Stenhouse Publishers. 2009. Print. - Kelly Gallagher suggests that American schools are the reason that there is a decline of reading by students. Specifically, he contends that the standard instructional practices used in most schools are killing reading by:  valuing the development of test-takers over the development of lifelong readers; mandating breadth over depth in instruction; requiring students to read difficult texts without proper instructional support; insisting that students focus solely on academic texts;  drowning great books with sticky notes, double-entry journals, ignoring the importance of developing recreational reading; and  losing sight of authentic instruction in the shadow of political pressures.
